A letter from our Co-Founder: The Highlight of 2021
As 2021 draws to a close, I have been reflecting on what we are most proud of as a business in 2021. There is much I could share about our new retailer launches, industry awards and glowing five-star reviews. But that wouldn’t be the truth.
At the heart of everything we do we want to contribute to a better society.
The thing I am most proud of for Five Dot Botanics this year is that we took on three trainees through the governments’ Kickstart scheme, which targets youths at risk of long-term unemployment.
Offering young people opportunities and training is something very close to my heart.
Sometimes in life, you just need a lucky break. The recent pandemic has made it harder for 16-24 years olds to get that first entry step into a job.
This summer we took on Antonio, Kwabena and Victoria, training them across business operations, marketing, PR, content and social. This would not have been possible without an incredible team within Five Dot Botanics, Georgina our Business Operations Manager and Katherine our Marketing Manager have both been instrumental in developing our 3 trainees.
Watching our trainees grow in confidence, organise and lead meetings, find their voice, learn how to work as a team and be responsible for their own work was an incredible privilege.
They came from a range of backgrounds, they are smart and funny. They also became great colleagues and friends, which was incredibly heart-warming. It is easy to think that the learning flow was one way, however, I learnt so much from Antonio, Kwabena and Victoria. They brought a fresh perspective and cultural relevance to everything last year.
Taking in trainees is a lesson in patience and a reminder that in order to learn we must give people the space to make mistakes.
Moving on from setbacks is a key skill in life and passing that on to our trainees was important but a lesson they had to gain through learning for themselves.
The thing I hope we passed on to our trainees is the benefits of having a can-do attitude and how to create a positive mindset.
There are so many skills they will pick up along the way, however, the greatest gift we wanted to give them was optimism.
To fortify their self-confidence, to contribute to the journey they are on and hope we leave a legacy that creates something positive for them in future. You can read more about what our trainees thought of working for us, and why they decided to work with us here.
When we set up Five Dot Botanics, we always wanted to give people the gift of healthy skin, however, under the bonnet, we are a business that is hard wired to do good.
Every single small step we take towards doing better for people and the planet really counts for us.
In the new year, we will be launching our new social impact fund and I can’t wait to share more about that.
Thank you for being part of the Five Dot family!
