In-Home Holistic Facial With Helen

Interest in holistic facials and in-home facial treatments has been increasing and more and more people are seeing and feeling the benefit of skincare being part of their holistic wellbeing.

Five Dot Botanics recently collaborated with Helen Dumbleton-Moore to create a holistic facial using our range of natural skincare products. Below, is our interview with Helen where you can get to know her she tells us all you need to know about her holistic facial and what you might expect from this fabulously relaxing treatment.

Helen trained as a beauty therapist and has many years of experience working in the beauty industry including within top salons.  She recently set up her own business in south-east London offering in-home treatments.

When Helen was looking for a brand to work with for her new holistic facial treatment, Helen and Zaffrin (Co-Founder, Five Dot Botanics) met. They discovered that they were neighbours, had a common interest in wellness and had similar values. From there they decided to collaborate on an in-home holistic facial, which Helen designed for her clients incorporating the Five Dot Botanics product range.

Five Dot Botanics had always hoped to see the range used in holistic facial treatment and Helen came with a wealth of experience from the beauty and spa industry and a desire to use vegan and cruelty-free natural skincare.

What is a holistic facial?

A holistic facial is a great way to take care of your skin. Five Dot Botanics are ideal holistic facial products as they are plant-based and natural.

A holistic facial means treating that person as a whole, not just on their skin type. A holistic facial contains the same principles as a regular facial in that a routine of cleanse, tone, exfoliate, applying a mask and then moisturising is followed but there is a huge focus on deep relaxation and releasing tension and stress from the body as a whole” says Helen.

A holistic facial can help you improve the condition of your skin, and aims to improve skin tone and texture through massage movements designed to increase circulation.

However, it takes a holistic approach and concentrates on the person as a whole and not just what skin type that person has.  One of the benefits of holistic facials is that there is a lot more focus on facial massage and tension release.

Having experienced the holistic facial Zaffrin O’Sullivan, our Co-Founder said that  “Helen’s treatment is much more than just a facial, she incorporates lots of incredible face massage, calming music and the rare opportunity to thoroughly relax”.

When it comes to holistic facial therapists, feeling comfortable with whoever is giving your treatment is key. “Helen has a really tranquil presence, she is an exceptionally gifted therapist and our plant-based skincare compliments this holistic treatment really well”.

Here we find out a bit more about Helen.

Helen, please can you tell us a bit more about yourself?

I have a real love for nature, I love being outdoors come rain or shine.

I have a dog called Pablo, and getting outside with him every day is one of my favourite things to do. I find being in nature really relaxes me, it’s definitely an important thing for my mental health.

I also love travelling, being by the sea and experiencing other cultures. I can’t wait to get on a plane after lockdown and start taking my son to new places again. I think it’s so important for a child to travel. I’m so grateful that my Mum used to take me and my sister on amazing holidays as young children to places like Kenya.

Those memories stay with you forever. I also love music. Music can change your mood instantly. It can lift you up, take you back to a particular memory, or sometimes have a much-needed cry to it.

How did you get into the world of facial treatments?

I trained at London School of Beauty in 2007 where I received my CIBTAC certificate, which is an internationally recognised diploma in beauty, and anatomy and physiology.  I have been a beauty therapist for 14 years.

My career started at a spa in Chelsea. After a couple of years there I discovered male grooming. I was always more drawn to massage and facials rather than nails and lashes, so felt like this was the right path for me.

I started off at a male grooming salon in Selfridges London, and after a year there found The Refinery in Mayfair where I have been self-employed for 9 years. I used to be full-time but went part-time after having my son, Rex who is now nearly 4.

Last year I decided that I wanted to start building a clientele locally to where I live in South East London, slowly going back to full-time work now my son is a bit older. So whilst still working at The Refinery, I am now a mobile therapist in SE23 and its surrounding areas which I am absolutely loving.

The majority of my local clients are women, so it’s nice to have a balance now. This area is full of community, everyone is always so keen to help and support each other and it is bursting with extremely talented and inspiring people. I feel very lucky to have such amazing clients.

What made you decide to look for a natural brand to work with?

When I decided to go mobile I was determined to find a local, ethical skincare range that was vegan and cruelty-free to use in a more holistic facial.

I wanted to support another local business and I wanted a natural range because I think more and more people, including myself, are now wanting to know exactly what they are putting on their skin and that it’s been sourced ethically.

Natural and vegan are not synonymous, lots of “natural” products are not vegan or cruelty-free. It’s actually very difficult to find a brand that is both vegan and cruelty-free, so I was very excited to discover that five Dot Botanics was! Five Dot Botanics products only use 5 ingredients in any product so it is really transparent and easy for you to always know what you are putting on your skin.

Natural skincare is also much better for the environment, which is very important to me.  I posted on a local Facebook group asking if anyone knew of anyone and a local mum and friend of mine tagged Five Dot Botanics. I literally couldn’t believe my luck after getting in touch with them, they ticked every single box!

Five Dot Botanics have never had their products used in a professional facial, so I was over the moon to be able to create a facial using their 6 amazing products.

What might someone expect from this holistic facial treatment?

Using the Five Dot Botanics six products and a combination of movements to relieve stress and tension in your shoulders, scalp and face. The products are all designed to strengthen the skin’s barrier and are suitable for all skin types.

Face massage promotes oxygen and blood flow in our skin, reducing puffiness and it also creates brighter skin tone, so expect to feel cleansed, nourished and have beautifully brighter skin.

A lavender clay mask is applied, to draw out toxins and balance pH levels for the ultimate skin detox and the lavender aroma instantly has a soothing and calming effect on your mind and body.

Whilst this is working its magic, a shoulder and scalp massage is carried out, guiding you into a deep state of relaxation giving your mind and body a chance to rest and recharge.

What’s one piece of skincare advice you wish more people knew?

One piece of skincare advice that I wish all people knew would be: Wear SPF everyday!!

Come rain or shine, it is so important to use SPF daily. It reduces the risk of developing skin cancer. UVAs are the number one cause of premature ageing, so using it every day you are slowing down the development of wrinkles. It will also prevent any sun damage from occurring, so will keep your skin tone even. It protects against UVB rays, the ones that burn you, and some of them even protects you against infrared that radiates from our computer screens. A lot of moisturisers and foundations have SPF built-in, which is great, but I prefer to use a physical sunscreen as they have higher protection.

What’s your favourite Five Dot Botanics product?

My favourite Five Dot Botanics product has to be the Rose Clay and Lavender mask. Not only does it smell insanely good, but it also works! It saved my skin after having to wear a protective face mask at work for hours, which caused horrible breakouts.

I’ve also recommended this mask to a lot of clients and friends, and they all love it. To be honest this is a really tough question because I actually love and use all 6 of the products. All of them have a super clean feeling when applied and they work! I love that all the packaging is made from recycled materials, and most of it can then be recycled again once finished.
